THE HOSPITAL

Two hands clasped together
Over a rounded belly
In anticipation
Of a new life
A gift
Waiting for that first glimpse
Of that black and white image
The first picture
Of a life about to be born

A pair of arms cuddling
A new life created
Familiarizing
Protecting
Nurturing
A smile exchanged between
Two beings who made
This new bundle of joy
A new life chapter awaits

A hand holds a cold metal chair
Head bowed over
In a prayer
Fearful
Hopeful
Desperate
Mixed thoughts and emotions
Waiting for some comforting words
On what the future holds

Two frail hands clasped together
One as veiny as the other
In utter resignation
Remembering
Thankful
At peace
Ready to leave behind
A past...a life lived to fullest
The certain end is near.

*I wrote this poem today, September 11, 2013. This was inspired by my observations of different patients in the hospital while Oyen and I were waiting for our turn with the doctor.
